This debut novel from from hip hop artist turned author Stephanie "Nina' Acon, is a must read! The author takes us on a roller coaster ride with characters Gabriana Hilson and Scholar that you won't soon forget!
"Escape From a Nightmare" was definitely one of the best books I've read all year. It is truly an urban fiction with a array of unexpected events. Love of self, man and God are all represented here with a story line that leaves you wanting more.
Apparently this is Ms Acon's breakout novel and to her I give a hats off as she has set the stage to become one of the best in her trade. Her lack of fear for telling the truth is both appreciated and needed, and I personally can't wait for the follow-up book to come.
This is a book for a generation of us who are searching for answers to life's most perplexing questions. 'Escape From a Nightmare' takes us on a journey of ups and downs, gives us hope, and demonstrates the everyday challenges of life, love, heartbreak, mistakes, forgiveness, and the struggle to move on.
I say keep em coming Ms. Acon...Keep em coming!!
Came across this novel browsing for African American fiction. I had never heard of the authors work but was drawn in by the books synopsis and heavy plot line. This book ended up being quite a heavy hitting tale dealing with a young girl torn between what feels right and what we know to be right. She is involved with a young man who's lifestyle and actions prove very toxic for our main character . Later on she meets a man who is everything we imagine a good man to be. But, as most of us women are, she stupidly wrestles with the relationship with the two. The intriguing factor is that she suffers these nightmares that end up being vision like clues into the things upcoming in her journey. A journey that leads her into a direction I wasn't expecting her to go; a journey to God and the peace and help that always follows a persons journey to him. The twist at the end was actually the bow on a well thought and crafted piece. Kudos to the author and I look forward to reading more pieces from Ms. Stephanie in the future.
When you know in your heart the person you love is not right for you, what do you do? Gabriana has a hard time realizing this in Escape From A Nightmare by Stephanie Acon. Gabriana meets Scholar and starts on a downward spiral because she will do whatever it takes to acquire the number one spot in Scholar's life. On the other hand, when Gabriana meets Khali she experiences a totally different kind of connection, but Gabriana's dependency and mood swings keep Khali confused. After experiences some unfortunate events, Gabriana, realizes she needs to do some soul searching, which leads her down the road of rediscovering her purpose.
Escape From A Nightmare is about struggles, relationships and learning from mistakes. The main character goes through several challenges and her ability to overcome them through her new found spirituality was exciting to see. The twists were unsuspected as the author takes readers on an enlightening journey that keeps you hanging on until the end. At times I did not know whether to be frustrated or sad for Gabriana but I enjoyed this character. I recommend this book to others.
